Conch - The Symbol of Key West
The Conchs, as the native inhabitants of Key West are affectionately
known, get their name from the hardy, beautiful mollusk that is culturally bound
to the history and character of Key West.
Along with shrimp, turtles, cigars, and assorted contraband, Conch was once
the basis of one of Key West's major industries at the beginning of the century.
Today, after years of protection on the Endangered Species list, the conch has
been making a strong comeback in local waters.
The Conch Republic was formed following the infamous secession attempt in the
early 80's, in response to a federal roadblock designed to catch illegal
immigrants at the "border" with the mainland. In a typical act of defiance of
convention, Keys residents challenged Washington by ceremoniously declaring war
on the U.S., immediately surrendering, and applying for foreign aid. We're still
waiting for the foreign aid.
The lovely pink hues of the conch shell are naturally polished by the animal
as it moves in the shell.
